Although the 12 Steps traces it's origins to Frank Buchner's Oxford groups of the first half of the 20th Century, the roots of faith based addiction recovery reaches as far back as the revivalist movements of 19th Century America. Besides its Christian Evangelical origins faith based addiction recovery remains larger than just the generic 12 Steps. Whether it's Zen Budhism, Chassidut, or Sufism, all spiritual paths promote a sense of selflessness and surrender to an infinite source.
The 12 Steps are merely an outgrowth of an America, whose Christian roots have dominated the country and yet the 12 Steps themselves remain somewhat generic, allowing for people outside of the Christian faith to procure them. Nevertheless it is important to survey varied approaches to faith as it relates to addiction recovery.
